Jose Mourinho has been quoted as saying that the entire Chelsea team should have been named in the 2015 PFA Premier League Team of the Year.  Whilst being tongue-in-cheek his team now stand on the verge of being crowned Premier League champions, so is there any merit to this flippant remark?

Let’s start with the Goalkeeper position. Chelsea stopper Thibaut Courtois has had a good first season in English football and has been the backbone of a largely impenetrable Chelsea defence. The Goalkeeper position for the PFA team of the Year went to Manchester United’s David De Gea but if it wasn’t for his spectacular form Courtois may well have been the keeper of choice.

The back four in the PFA team of the year is a unit consisting of three Chelsea players, Branislav Ivanovic, John Terry and Gary Cahill; as well as Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand.  Mourinho has rotated in the left-back position, playing both Cesar Azpilicueta and Filipe Luis and neither has truly nailed down the position. Pablo Zabaleta and Jose Fonte have been suggested as other potentially deserving inclusions.

In midfield, Chelsea have two players selected. Eden Hazard, the recently named PFA played of the year, is a largely undisputed choice. The inclusion of their holding midfielder Nemanja Matic has also seemingly received few complaints from football fans. The two other midfield positions went to Alexis Sanchez of Arsenal and Philippe Coutinho of Liverpool. Santi Cazorla and Christian Eriksen are regarded as possibly unfortunate to miss out and two Chelsea midfielders touted of perhaps being deserving of a place are Cesc Fabregas and Willian.

Chelsea Goal-machine Diego Costa, who has averaged almost a goal a game, was selected upfront along with Tottenham’s young English starlet Harry Kane. Other shortlisted strikers included Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero and Manchester United talisman Wayne Rooney. Cases could be made for either being picked.

Everybody has their own opinions about the individuals that make up the Premier League team of the Year but Chelsea are the team that overall has performed best. Chelsea have three remaining home fixtures this season. They play Liverpool on 9th May in the pick of their remaining games.
